May 30-June 5, 2010
Hosted by:
Commuter Challenge occurred during Canadian Environmental Week from May 30 to June 5, and finally the results are in! Saskatoon placed 5th in the population category of 100,000 to 249,000 after Kelowna, Regina, Guelph, and Thunder Bay. In total we had 175 participants from 27 organizations and we save 4,503 kg of greenhouse gases. Congratulations Saskatoon and keep commuting sustainably! October 25-29th is ride-share week, another chance to show your commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through your transportation choices.
Congratulations to all prize winners (announced earlier this week) and thank you to all participants. Also, thanks to in motion, Bruce’s Cycle, and the Saskatoon StarPhoenix for prize donations, and to Retire your Ride, in motion, the City of Saskatoon, and the Saskatoon Media Group for promoting the event.
Saskatoon Overall Results
Participants = 175
Participating Organizations = 27
GHG Emissions Saved = 4,503 kg
Driving Distance Saved = 13,601 km
Vehicle Costs Saved (fuel, parking) = $2,221
Paricipation of workplaces ranged from less than 5 employees to over 500 employees. Saskatoon Health Region Employee winner Carol Dash - Food Service Supervisor - Food & Nutrition - Saskatoon City Hospital won an in motion prize package. She was interested in the Commuter Challenge, she says:
"I thought the Commuter Challenge would be a fun thing to do. I was interested in seeing how many participants we would have in th Health Region and how I could personally make a difference. After viewing the results I see there was room for many more to get involved so my goal for next year will be to spread the word and hopefully get more people to participate.
I am interested in becoming more healthy, burning more calories and this seemed like a simple way to do it. I was inspired by a co-worker who participated in the challenge last year, she encouraged me to sign up. I would do it again and challenge other health region employees to get more active and join in."
Congratulations to everyone who took part this year in the Commuter Challenge. We will keep trying to make Saskatoon more physically active through the Commuter Challenge next year!
