Here are some ideas that schools are doing to encourage regular physical activity:
- school walks (the entire school starts the day with a 15 minute walk)
- hallway dances
- extended recess time (providing structured and non-structured activity time)
- activity theme weeks (volunteer instructors brought into school to introduce students to new activities)
- classroom "motion" breaks (taking 5 to 10 minutes to do an active activity during class time)
Here are ideas that you can do as a family:
- go to local community rink and skate together or play shinny
- tobogganing is a great activity (especially walking up the hill!)
- go for family walks
- swim as a family
- learn a new activity as a family (i.e. tai chi, bowling, golf, skiing, etc.)
- nature hikes are great year round
- bike together
